- [6 amazing facts about collars: the origins of the leather dog collar, the Invisible Fence and more](https://ralphand.co/blogs/news/6-amazing-facts-about-collars-the-origins-of-the-leather-dog-collar-the-invisible-fence-and-more): If you are a dog owner, you probably take your canine’s collar for granted – almost as an extension of the dog himself. But have you ever stopped to think about the origins of collars and their journey through the years? We combed through the timeline of dog collars and picked out some of the most fascinating nuggets of information – so get stuck in: # Leather dog collars were first used as a fashion statement in Ancient Egypt Pharaohs and Queens from the pre-Dynastic era in Ancient Egypt are believed to be the first dog owners who used ornate leather dog collars as an accessory for their companion rather than a means to restrain them. The leather dog collars were decorated with precious metals, and became increasingly more elaborate as dog ownership grew in popularity. # Dog collars were used for protection in Ancient Greece and Rome In early Grecian and Roman societies where dogs were used to defend livestock as well as for companionship, leather dog collars featured studs or spikes as a way to protect canines from predators. In small Greek farms here cattle, sheep and other domestic animals were often targeted by wolves, the dogs who herded them were also at risk. The metal spikes protruding from their leather collars were designed to protect dogs’ necks from wolf bites. # Dog collars served as a sign of status during the Middle Ages Dog owners used padlocked leather dog collars to establish their ownership of a pet during the Middle Ages. The canine’s owner will have the only key to the padlock of the dog collar, which will often be lavishly designed as a display of their upper class status, power and wealth. Leather dog collar designs of the time often featured precious metals (much like the Egyptian fashion), as well as priceless gems. It was also around that time that middle class people started keeping dogs as pets. The collars they used for canines, however, were much simpler, often made from plain affordable leather and finished off with the padlock owners can use to prove ownership of the dog. # The Industrial Revolution also revolutionised dog collar fashion The Industrial Revolution was another key moment in the history of collars. Previously made manly from leather, dog collars of the time started commonly featuring other materials, such as brass, silver and gold as well. Owners would often engrave their names on the collar of their pet, alongside any witty sayings they found suited their companion. These first steps in versatility really took off, leading to the contemporary proliferation of choices when it comes to dog collars. Today, you can find dog collar in any material and any style (from utilitarian to designer), complete with various gadgets or baubles. # The Invisible Fence changed canine lives Invented by a travelling salesman in 1973, the Invisible Fence provided an alternative way for dog owners restricted by the Home Owners Association rules on fences and dog pens to contain their pets and protect them from getting run over. The fence works by sending electrical signals to the dog collar, and has saved dozens of animal lives over the past four and a half decades. # The essential accessory Modern day dog collars have transcended their practical application to become a billion pound industry, which provides dog owners with the opportunity to make a fashion statements with their dog’s collars. Collars for different occasions, collars tailor made for your dog using precious metals – the sky is the limit! - [Can you teach an old dog new tricks?](https://ralphand.co/blogs/news/dog-tricks): They say you can’t teach an old dog new tricks, but we think you could give it a good go with these simple step-by-step dog trick guides. We all love the idea of having a well trained dog. After your puppy has some basic skills like sit and stay, why not try out some more advanced dog tricks. These tricks might take a little while to learn so you'll need a little patience, but it will all be worth it in the end! Tips for teaching your dog tricks Be patient. Use treats to help your dog learn. Praise your dog enthusiastically when they perform well. Keep sessions short (5-10 minutes), and frequent. Don't get angry at your dog. Trick 1: Teach your dog to high 5 Begin with your dog in the sit position. Hold a treat up to them and say ‘high 5’ whilst touching one of their paws. They might paw at the treat in your hand. If your dog does this, gently pick the paw up and reward your dog enthusiastically with the treat. Repeat these steps until your dog lifts its paw to your hand when you say they ‘high 5’ command. When your dog masters one paw, try to repeat these steps with the other paw! Trick 2: Teach your dog to lie down Encourage your dog into a sitting position. With a treat in your hand, move your hand from your dogs nose to the floor. Your dog should follow the treat into a lying down position. When it does, reward your dog with a treat and praise enthusiastically. When your dog lies down easily, introduce the command ‘lie down’. Repeat this trick often and in different locations until your dog learns its new trick! Trick 3: Teach your dog to roll over Start learning this trick with your dog in the ‘down’ position. Put a treat in your hand and move your hand slowly behind your dog’s neck. The goal is to get your dog to turn its head towards the treat without standing up. As its head reaches back towards the treat, gently turn your dog over. When your dog rolls over, give it the treat and praise them enthusiastically. Repeat this process, saying ‘roll over’ when your dog rolls completely over. Repeat until your dog rolls over with ease! Trick 4: Teach your dog to fetch When your dog has a toy in its month, hold your hand underneath it to encourage them to drop it. When you get the toy, give it back until your dog learns to drop it in your hand. Next try throwing the toy. Begin by throwing it closer so it’s easier for your dog to learn the trick. After throwing the toy, hold out your palm and say fetch. Encourage your dog with a treat if you need to. Try throwing the toy further, each time saying ‘fetch’ until they know to bring it back. - [Dog friendly activities for the weekend](https://ralphand.co/blogs/news/dog-friendly-activities-for-the-bank-holiday-weekend): As lockdown restrictions ease across the UK, here are a few ways you can make the most of your new found freedom and get back out with your pup safely - come rain or shine. Take your pup to a dog-friendly beer garden With outdoor hospitality open across the country, why not bring your dog along to a pup-friendly pub garden or restaurant terrace? Whether you’re heading out to socialise with friends, or off for a spot of lunch with your household - choosing a garden that welcomes dogs means your four legged companion can join in on the fun too. Most bars will request you keep your dog on the lead so make sure to bring some treats or toys to keep your dog entertained and stimulated. Pack an interactive treat ball full of your dog’s favourite snack and they’ll be occupied for hours. Make the most of nature Use the weekend to refresh and recharge by immersing yourself in nature. Head out to your nearest National Park or nature trail and make the most of time spent outdoors. Make sure you check out the rules on dogs before you arrive. When visiting many public spaces in the UK, you will be required to keep your dog on its lead. Get out for some exercise Even if you don’t manage to get to a beautiful nature spot, you can still make it an active weekend with your dog. If a healthy break from work is more your thing, why not use the extra time to exercise with your dog. Head out for a jog or power walk to make sure you, and your dog, are getting your daily steps in. Head to a dog-friendly beach If you’re lucky enough to live near the cost, taking your dog for a beachside stroll can be a rewarding experience for you both. Enjoy the sea breeze and coastal views, while giving your dog the chance to stretch its legs or even take a swim. Before heading to any beach with your furry friend, do your research to ensure it’s dog-friendly. Some beaches only allow dogs to visit outside of the peak season, so be sure your information is up to date. Head to The Beach Guide , for a list of dog friendly beaches in each region. Test out your baking skills with some dog themed cooking What better way to treat your dog, than with freshly-baked, dog-appropriate cakes? There are lots of recipes online for dog-friendly cake recipes, without all of the sugar and dairy in a typical cake. You can even create a buttercream frosting effect, by whipping up some mashed potatoes for the icing. All that’s left to do is decorate it with your dog’s favourite treats and Voila - a bank holiday that your furry friend won’t forget! What are your tips for the weekend? Let us know! Ralph & Co. - [5 Spring/Summer interior trends for 2021](https://ralphand.co/blogs/news/5-spring-summer-interior-trends-for-2021): After a long year of being cooped up in our homes, now more than ever we recognise the importance of having a space that feels your own. This year's spring summer interior trends prioritise creating a calming and comfortable space, with neutral tones and natural materials. Here are our top SS21 interior trends to incorporate into your home. Earth tones As for colours, earth tones are a must in your home this summer. Using warm-toned, natural hues can bring a room back to nature. Using calming and neutral tones also creates a cozy and comforting vibe in your home. Opting for earth tones on your walls and floors means you can furnish your house with a range of complimentary colours. Neutral colours are a great base for bright shades of blue and sage green. Try pairing our blue Rayleigh Nest Bed with a neutral interior style to create a stylish pop of colour. Houseplants, houseplants and more houseplants Houseplants have become a staple interior feature over the past year, as they brought a little bit of the outside in while we were stuck indoors. However, our love for our plant-babies doesn’t seem to be dwindling and the interior trend is definitely here to stay. Unlike our fur babies, they don’t need walking twice a day, but you can read simple care guides online to provide tips on how often to water them and how much light they need. While they can’t give you their paw, houseplants will still repay you with purified air and a sense of calm. Cottagecore Cottagecore is the interior trend that continues to dominate social media feeds, and the hashtag #cottagecore has 1.9 million posts on Instagram! Cottagecore is all about creating a simplistic, nostalgic and rustic country-style in your home. Cottagecore is best executed in period properties or quaint cottages with traditional features like exposed beams and vintage floors. However, you can still bring cottagecore vibes to your modern apartment or new build home. Choose soft furnishings that replicate the cosiness of visits to your grandparents house as a child. Combine, comfortable decor with 50s floral patterns and colours, full-length curtains with wooden poles and statement, vintage pieces of furniture. Natural fabrics Natural statement interior pieces are a great way to create a chic, bohemian feel in your home. Pairing wicker, rattan and wooden items in modern rooms, gives your home a subtle retro, 70s vibe. Try styling your houseplants in large wooden planters, or covering your ceiling lights with large rattan shades. Statement wicker mirrors, lamp shades or even items of furniture are also a good way to incorporate natural fabrics within your room. Our Lincoln Nest Bed is the perfect soft furnishing to compliment the natural fabrics in your home. Colour pop prints Switching up your prints or wall art is an easy way to introduce pops of colour into your home. Monochrome, abstract prints are beginning to make way for more seasonal, light and bright art pieces. Lining your walls with pops of bright contrasting colours, or subtle pastels creates a fun and fresh summer vibe. Once you begin to brighten up your prints, you can introduce bright furnishings to compliment your new colour palette. Pair our blue Rayleigh collection with some colour pop wall art from the Desenio collection to brighten up any room. Which interior trend will you be introducing to your home? Let us know! - [The best dog-friendly staycations for your summer getaway](https://ralphand.co/blogs/news/the-best-dog-friendly-staycations-for-your-summer-getaway): There are lots of pup-friendly staycations you can take across the country, to avoid leaving your furry companion in the kennels. Whether you’re after a bit of beachside luxury or a retreat in nature, a trip to the southern coast, or a hiking trip in the Northern Peaks - here’s a selection of dog-friendly breaks across the UK to consider. Luxury Herne Bay beach break If you’re after a high-end getaway at a beachside location, the stunning Bellevue by the Bay is the place for you. The two bed apartment sleeps four people and two well-behaved pups. However, what really sets this holiday rental apart is the panoramic coastal views - enjoy breakfast on the balcony overlooking the sea, or if the weather isn’t on side, sip a glass of wine at the dining table, with period windows overlooking the coast. There are a number of dog-friendly beaches around Bellevue, including Herne Bay itself and Recluver just a short distance away. With limited availability remaining in July and September, make sure to snap up a stay here before it’s too late. Car free camping on the Inner Hebrides For some, ultimate relaxation comes when completely detached from the hustle and bustle of everyday life and there’s not much further from urban life than a car-free island in the Inner Hebrides. The Isle Of Iona Campsite is situated on the tiny, peaceful island just a few minutes walk away from the beach. The campsite only has non-electric grass pitches, so you’ll need to take your camping gear. The island can be accessed via ferry, and the campsite is just a 20 minute walk from the port. Cars are only allowed for residents so you’ll need to leave your vehicle behind, but given the island is just three miles long, you should cope without it. Dogs are welcome at the campsite all year around, and you can enjoy leisurely walks all around the island and across its beaches. However, don’t forget to pack dog toys and treats - with just a handful of amenities on the island, you won’t find a pet shop to stock up. Cotswolds cottage break If camping isn’t your style, but you still fancy a trip to the country just with a little more luxury, Bay Tree Cottage is a great fit. Located near the small Cotswolds town of Chipping Norton, Bay Tree Cottage has all the charm you would expect from a quaint countryside cottage. You may stumble across the odd celebrity (or even a royal) during your stay in this high-end Cotswold corner. You’ll be surrounded by plenty of scenic country walks to enjoy with your pooch and plenty of dog-friendly cafes. Peak District If you want an active holiday, the Peak District has many fantastic hikes, climbs and cycle routes to follow. 2 Pheasant Lane is the perfect base to explore the Peak District and the Derbyshire Dales, plus it’s dog-friendly too! The detached cottage and accompanying Shepherd’s hut sleeps eight guests combined, so whether you’re planning a trip with friends or family, you’ll have plenty of room. The outdoor space boasts a BBQ, pizza oven, hot tub and a sauna! The property allows two well-behaved dogs, but extra furry friends are welcome as long as you let the property owners know before your booking is confirmed. Welsh beach break Wales has a huge list of impressive beaches - from surfing hotspots, to quaint coves and family friendly stretches. The county of Pembrokeshire in the southeast of Wales is home to a number of excellent beach towns and beautiful coastal views. Willow Cottage is a two bedroom holiday rental in central Pembrokeshire, making it the perfect base to visit a great selection of nearby beaches. Just a short drive from Tenby and Saundersfoot, you can enjoy plenty of coastal walks with your pooch. If staying in and relaxing is more your scene, the property has an outdoor hot tub and log burner so you can enjoy British summer nights, regardless of the weather! Wherever you plan to staycation with your pup, make sure you’re prepared with dog supplies, and take a dog bed along with you, in case your stay does not provide one. Our Pillow Beds are easy to pack away, and can even be laid out in the car! Where have you visited on a dog-friendly staycation? Let us know! Ralph & Co. Team
- [Keeping your dog safe this summer](https://ralphand.co/blogs/news/keeping-your-dog-safe-this-summer): With bitter cold winters and rain all year round both key features of UK weather, many people will be longing for heatwave weather. However, as the temperatures begin reaching the 30 degrees mark and we get our own taste of Mediterranean weather, it’s important you take extra measures to make sure your dog is safe in the heat. Don’t walk your dog at the hottest times of the day As the British summer reaches its peak, plan your daily dog walks at times that avoid the hottest sun. In a heatwave, it’s best to walk your dog first thing in the morning, or as late as possible in the evening, to avoid them overheating. Heatstroke can be fatal for dogs, and it can only take a small increase of a dog’s body temperature to kick in. Plan your walks to ensure there is lots of shade available for yourself and your pup to take a break from the sun. If the weather is particularly hot, you may even want to cut your walks short to avoid over-exercising your dog in the heat. If you have a young or energetic dog that is desperate to run around and play, keeping your dog on a longer training lead during the heat could stop them from wearing themselves out. Take a temperature test before leaving If you’re taking your dog out during daylight hours in a hot spell, make sure to take the temperature test before you leave. The Kennel Club recommends using the seven second rule to work out if it’s safe to walk your dog. Place the back of your hand on the pavement for second seconds, if the ground feels too warm on your skin, it will also be too hot for your furry friend. Hot surfaces can burn or blister your dog’s paw pads. Signs of burnt paws are limping, licking or biting their paws, part of the pad could be missing, or they could be red and blistered - if you spot any of these signs, take your dog to a vet . Make sure your dog has access to plenty of water at all times While at home, make sure your dog’s water bowl is refilled regularly. To help cool your pup down and keep them hydrated, freeze some fruit, natural yoghurt or their favourite treats inside an ice cube. If you’re making the most of the rare patch of sun and visiting friends or family, or heading for a pub garden lunch, make sure your dog will have access to water. You can find portable pet water bowls on Amazon to stay fully prepared. If your dog likes to be outside and the blaring sun doesn’t deter them from wanting to be in the garden, you could think about getting a paddling pool for your dog to splash around in! Never leave your dog alone in a hot car or sun trap As restrictions ease across the UK, many people will be making the most of the summer by heading off on staycation or out for day trips with their furry friends. It’s vital you plan your trips carefully to ensure you don’t need to leave your dog unattended in the car on your journey. Compact spaces such as cars are sun traps in a heatwave, and even if you park in the shade and leave your windows open, it could still be dangerous for your dog. Never leave your dog alone in a car on a warm day. If you do spot a distressed dog left in a car on a hot summer's day, call 999. Other spaces such as caravans, conservatories or outbuildings like greenhouses or sheds can also be too hot for your dog. You can still make the most of the hot weather and enjoy the British summer while keeping your dog safe. Follow these steps and pay attention to any changes in your dog to make sure this summer doesn’t end in disaster. Do you have any tips to help keep your dog cool in the summer? Let us know! - [The best country walks to take with your dog](https://ralphand.co/blogs/news/the-best-country-walks-to-take-with-your-dog): A weekend walk with your dog is a great way to clear your head after a busy week. Spending some time in nature and detaching from the hustle and bustle of everyday life is not only rewarding and stimulating for your dog, but it can also be a real mental boost for you too! The UK boasts many scenic destinations that are perfect for a countryside stroll, but we’ve handpicked the best walking spots across the country where your dog is welcome too. Stretch your legs in the Lake District Whether you’re on staycation in the Lake District or you live locally, there are a huge variety of walks to complete with different difficulty levels. Whether you’re after an elevated hike, or a leisurely lakeside stroll - there’s a walk suitable for you and your furry friend. For stunning views across Windermere Lake, try the west shore walk, starting at the Harrowslack National Trust car park. This dog-friendly walk is moderately challenging and can take anywhere from an hour and a half to three hours. While hiking, enjoy views of the Islands of Windermere and Wray Castle. Head to the National Trust for full route details. While the Lake District is a great place to take a walk with your dog, it’s important to ensure you are cautious about the local wildlife, and how your dog may react to this. You may come across farmers' livestock or nesting birds on your walks, so it’s best to keep your dog on a lead to avoid disturbing them. Wander along the Welsh coast Pembrokeshire in the West of Wales is renowned for its stunning beaches and quaint seaside towns. One of the region's most impressive beaches is Barafundle Bay, which is often regarded as one of the world’s best beaches. Barafundle Bay sits between Stackpole Quay and Stackpole Head and it can only be accessed by cliff paths. Start at Stackpole Quay and follow the coastal paths until you reach the path down to the beach. Barafundle Bay is dog-friendly so if your pup loves splashing in the water or rolling in the hand, take a beachside break. Once you’ve got your toes sandy and enjoyed the cool beach air, head back up the cliff path and follow the coast along to Stackpole head, enjoying the breathtaking coastal views as you go. Explore the Midlands countryside If you’re after a dog-friendly walk in the Midlands, Croome in Worcestershire is great fun for your four-legged companion. The parkland welcomes all dogs to its outdoors areas, so you will have plenty of space to explore with your dog. Croome is home to Croome Court, a Grade I listed historic house, as well as a RAF museum and lots of parkland and outdoor space. The park has a combination of open fields and wooded areas, so there’s something to suit all dogs. For owners, the parkland hosts some impressive scenic views, so make sure to snap a picture! South West strolls The South West is a prime spot for tourists as it is home to some of the UK’s best beaches. But, if you’re not blessed with the weather or lounging on the beach all day just isn’t your scene, there is plenty of beautiful countryside to explore. From the rolling Cotswold hills to the coastal paths of Cornwall, there are walks in the region wherever you’re based. A must-do if you’re in Devon is the Heddon Valley in the North of Devon. You can take a light stroll around Heddon’s Mount in around an hour, so it's perfect for older or smaller dogs. The picturesque walk takes you through woodlands along the River Heddon to where the river meets the sea. Alongside the scenic views, the walk takes you around some of the country’s highest cliffs. There’s also lots of wildlife in the area, with otters and insects calling the Heddon Valley home. Take a hike in the North East In the UK we’re lucky to have fantastic scenery in every region, and the North West is no exception. In fact, Cragside in Northumberland is not only a fantastic walk for your furry friend, but there’s things to do for the whole family. Cragside is a Victorian country house dating back to the 1800s. The house itself is architecturally impressive, however it's also Britain’s first smart home. It was the home of William Armstrong, the scientist and philanthropist and it’s illuminated with hydro-electricity and powered by hydraulics. While a scientific masterpiece of a country home may not seem like an exciting day out for your pup, the land surrounding Cragside is completely dog-friendly. Cragside can be found on a rocky outcrop and there are 14 walks to take around the 1000 acre estate. At Cragside you’ll also find some resident deer and red squirrels, so you’ll need to keep your dog on a lead to avoid disturbing any wildlife. Leave each place as you find it Wherever you choose to walk, remember not to leave anything behind! Pick up after yourself and your dog and leave each place exactly as you found it. You want to ensure the area remains clean so it can be enjoyed by other walkers. Most areas will have a designated bin for dog waste, but if you can’t find somewhere to dispose of it properly,...
- [Bring Autumn into your home with these interior trends](https://ralphand.co/blogs/news/bring-autumn-into-your-home-with-these-interior-trends): Despite a sunny September, now we’ve reached October, it’s finally time to let go of summer. With it, goes the Spring/Summer interior trends that featured lots of bright colours, bold prints and tropical patterns. Instead, as we move into Autumn, deep shades and rustic furniture is in. In this blog, we’ll let you know how you can begin introducing Autumn looks into your home, without completely redecorating. Make your home a woodland wonderland Get your house ready for the colder seasons by introducing a woodland feel to your home. Think deep, earthy tones, soft abstract patterns and lots of plants. Nature-inspired interiors are perfect as we approach the winter as it allows homeowners to bring the outside in (but without the biting cold that goes with it). To recreate this luxe forest glam in your own home, you could give a few walls a makeover with a new shade of paint. Opt for dark olive greens or deep teal shades to ensure your home still feels cosy and calming. Pair these earthy tones with velvet furnishings, marble surfaces and a few gold details to add a chic touch to the woodland look. The most important feature of a nature-inspired decor is lots of plants, of course. Pack your shelves, surfaces and empty floor space with plants of all sizes. If you struggle to keep your plants healthy, try getting some faux foliage instead. Complete your woodland wonderland with our green Richmond Nest Bed - it’s the perfect soft furnishing to pair with earthy, natural tones. Begin introducing some rustic scandi vibes If a fairytale forest isn’t your style and you prefer neutral decor, another A/W21 interior style may be more to your taste. Rustic scandi is a combination of industrial and Scandinavian styles. It’s typically paired with neutral colours, exposed brick walls, reclaimed wood, dark metal or brass finishings. You can start introducing rustic scandi pieces to your home, without having to completely redecorate too. If you like a project and want to try your hand at some DIY, try taking existing pieces of wood furniture and replacing the handles or legs with black metal alternatives to give your furniture a real industrial feel. To quickly create a rustic scandi vibe in your home without any serious effort, you can start by carefully pairing items of different materials. For example, if you have a wood side table, or dining room table, decorate this with brass or metal candle stick or vase. Make it dazzle One of the big noticeable changes about the season, besides the drop in temperature, is that before you know it, it’s pitch black by the end of the working day. Not only does this make walking the dog a little more challenging (it might be time to invest in a light up collar), but it can make your house feel very dim without the right lighting. Lighting is a great way to set the ambiance in a room and create a relaxed atmosphere throughout your home. In order to create a cosy feel, instead of having all of your lights blazing, instead opt for warm lamps, candles or even a faux fireplace. One of the big interior trends to watch in the colder seasons is sophisticated glam. Inspired by the likes of Mayfair or Hollywood style, it involves styling bold, luxury pieces with simple decor. And, there’s no better way to introduce this style into your home than with some snazzy lighting. Introduce a gold or metallic lamp stand with a neutral coloured shade to give any room a pop of elegance. Double up on the soft furnishings With the cold evenings and shorter daylight hours, it can be tempting to get curled up on the sofa with a cup of hot choc from 5pm until bedtime. So, with cosy evenings in being the season’s new going out-out, extra soft furnishings are a must. Chunky knit throws for your sofa, and extra cushions for your bedroom will increase the comfort levels in your relaxation spaces. If having a hot bubble bath after a long day is your idea of bliss, make sure you invest in a cushioned bath matt and some extra large bath towels. Don’t leave your furry friend out of this one either. Our Nest Beds are perfect for the Autumnal months. Netflix nights aren’t complete without a cosy bed for your dog to curl up in. What's your favourite interior trend this Autumn? Let us know! Ralph & Co. Team
- [7 tips to keep your dog safe and calm on Bonfire Night](https://ralphand.co/blogs/news/7-tips-to-keep-your-dog-safe-and-calm-on-bonfire-night): Bonfire Night is approaching, which means dark evenings and firework displays are on the way. Although Guy Fawkes Night is supposed to be a fun annual celebration, it’s important to remember it can be traumatic for your dog. The loud bangs of fireworks and the sudden flashes of fire can startle your pup and this can cause a range of symptoms that could put your dog in danger. Anxious dogs might experience symptoms of shaking, crying, panting, hiding or even running away in fear. Here are some tips to keep your dog safe this Bonfire Night. 1. Prepare for Bonfire Night in advance If your dog is really disturbed by loud noises, leaving them alone for long periods around suspected firework displays could end badly. Begin preparing in advance by researching the dates of firework displays in your area to make sure your dog isn’t left unaccompanied during these times. Although Bonfire Night falls on Friday 5th November in 2021, the firework displays aren’t just limited to one night and the loud bangs of fireworks can often be heard for the entire week. 2.Walk your dog during the daytime Avoid taking your dog for walks in the evenings around Bonfire Night and instead opt for daylight strolls. Most firework displays happen after dark, and the loud noises can startle your dog and cause them to run, especially if they’re off the lead. Try to give your dog a long and stimulating walk during the daytime to tire them out ahead of the evening. 3. Turn on the TV or radio Although the supermarket ASDA has begun selling low noise fireworks , there’s no guarantee that these will be used in displays in your local area and it’s best to prepare for noisy nights. You can try to mask the sound of fireworks by distracting your dog with some familiar noises. Pop the TV on or even play some of your favourite music to distract your dog from the sounds. 4. Shut curtains and blinds It can be tempting to spot fireworks from your window, but while the glowing evening sky may be beautiful to you, the sudden flashes could startle your dog. Try to keep your curtains or blinds closed, to avoid any sudden scares for your pup. 5. Secure all exits Check all windows, doors and gates ahead of Bonfire Night to make sure there’s nowhere your dog can escape. Scared dogs can bolt, so secure your home. 6. Make your dog feel safe If your dog is scared, it may make loud noises or act out. Don’t get angry with your dog, as this could worsen the situation. Remain calm and try comforting your dog or distracting them. Try to engage your dog with toys, but don’t put pressure on them to play. If your dog would prefer to isolate themselves, or lie in a quiet room, try sitting with them to calm them down. 7. Keep your dog away from fireworks as much as possible It might seem like a good idea to familiarise your dog with fireworks so they’re accustomed to the noises and lights on Bonfire Night, however this should be avoided at all costs. If you don’t know how your dog will respond to certain sounds or their behaviour around unknown stimuli then playing similar sounds could be a very bad idea. We urge you not to attempt to take your dog to a firework display under any circumstances! You can still enjoy the festivities while also ensuring Bonfire Night isn’t a traumatic time for your dog. Do you have any tips to help keep pets calm at Bonfire Night? Let us know!

Look for paper made from non-toxic materials that won't harm pets if they decide to investigate. Gift something novel... - [Cooking up a Christmas doggy dinner? Here’s what your dog can and can’t eat over the festive period](https://ralphand.co/blogs/news/cooking-up-a-christmas-doggy-dinner-here-s-what-your-dog-can-and-can-t-eat-over-the-festive-period): We all love the festive period and all the treats and traditions that come with the season. But no one should be left out of the festivities this Christmas, and that includes our dogs. And while it’s great to make the holidays special for your furry friend, it’s important that their health and wellbeing comes first. In this guide, we’ll advise you of the Christmas treats that your dog should avoid at all costs, as well as some that could make an appearance in your dog's bowl on December 25th. Avoid any sweet treats We’ve all heard that chocolate is a no-go for our canine pals, but there are a lot of sweet treats around at Christmas, so it’s worth starting with this one. Chocolate is poisonous to dogs and cats as it contains a substance called theobromine. The severity of the chocolate poisoning depends on the amount and type of chocolate, with darker chocolate containing higher amounts of theobromine and so carrying a larger risk to animals. Signs of chocolate poisoning usually appear within 6 to 12 hours after consumption, and may last up to 72 hours. The symptoms to look out for include: Vomiting Diarrhea Restlessness Increased urination Tremors An elevated or abnormal heart rate As we open our own advent calendars, it’s important we don’t share any chocolate with the dog (even if they’ve mastered the art of begging!). But thankfully, there are plenty of dog friendly advent calendars on the market nowadays, and you might even want to create your own using a selection of their favourite treats, like these healthy snacks from Scrumbles . (Photo by Kostya Levit Naddubov from Pexels ) Be careful what you place in your dog’s stocking Not even the Grinch would forget to get a gift for his dog, Max, and so it goes without saying that we might want to spoil our pet around this time of year too. But beware of the cheaper rawhide dog treats that are sold as Christmas gifts - they can be very dangerous for your dog. While it’s good to help your dog keep their teeth clean and promote oral health, there are plenty of better treats we can offer our pet than rawhide. Rawhide is only intended for dogs to chew on, and if they accidentally swallow the tasty snack, it can cause blockages in their gastrointestinal tract, which can cause digestive problems leading to vomiting and diarrhoea. Instead, you may want to fill your dog’s stocking with lots of toys and treats that don’t pose such a risk, including natural deer antlers that can occupy even the biggest chewers for weeks! Make a pup-friendly Christmas dinner Ever fancied making your dog a Christmas dinner alongside your own? If this is something you’d like to try, make sure to avoid: Cooked bones from the meat Anything cooked in oil, fat or butter Pigs in blankets Potatoes Turkey or chicken skin Anything containing onion, garlic or leeks. Instead, make your dog a healthy dinner containing: Boiled carrots, parsnips, sprouts, broccoli, spinach, peas or green beans Raw carrots Lean parts of white meat Carrot or swede mash, without butter, salt or onions. You could even add nutritional supplements like nutritional yeast to give it a cheesy flavour (and a boost of important nutrients!) Dog-friendly desserts Some dogs will get their usual for Christmas dinner, and that’s okay. Perhaps you’ve planned a special dessert to brighten their day instead. Before feeding your pup any desserts, double check the ingredient information to see if it contains dairy, which isn’t toxic as such but can irritate doggy digestive systems, leading to gas and diarrhoea. Another sweet treat that we mustn’t share with Fido over the holiday period is Christmas cake. Traditionally, Christmas cakes contain sultanas or raisins, which like grapes, can all be potentially toxic to dogs . If ingested, they can cause gut problems and in serious cases, kidney failure. Look out for dog friendly alternatives, like puppy fro-yos and ice creams. You can even make dog-friendly cakes using non-harmful ingredients. Due to the decadent nature of these treats, they should only be given as a rare treat for your dog in small amounts. Cheese board anyone? Finally, it wouldn’t be Christmas without a cheese board. Cheese is a common high value treat for dogs, however it should only be given in small portions and infrequently. If you’re looking for a cheesy alternative to sprinkle over your dog’s dinner, try and get your hands on some nutritional yeast from your local health food store. Cheeses containing onion, garlic or a rich flavours are all common around Christmas but not something to be shared with dogs. We hope that this guide provides you with some ideas of ways to treat your dog over Christmas, without risking their health. The whole team at Ralph and Co would like to wish you a very merry Christmas. Ralph & Co. Team
- [Top tips for introducing exercise into your dog's routine](https://ralphand.co/blogs/news/top-tips-to-introducing-exercise-into-your-dogs-routine): We’re all looking for new ways to get fit, but anyone who has tried getting fit in the past knows how crucial a work-out buddy can be, for supporting and encouraging us, as well as holding us accountable. That’s why we recommend including your dog in your exercise routine. Dogs can’t tell the time, and yet they know when dinner time rolls around, and they make sure we know it too! Imagine your jogging partner is your dog, and you don’t fancy getting out of bed and going for a run that day – there’s a good chance your dog will force you out of bed anyway and get you outside in the fresh air. And once you get home, you’ll probably be thankful that they did. In this blog, you’ll find tips and tricks to get into exercising alongside your dog, and with a bit of luck (and routine) you’re likely to accidentally create the most enthusiastic personal trainer in the process. 1. Find an activity that you both enjoy It’s much easier to stick to your routine if the exercise you have planned are fun and exciting for you both. If the weather is nice enough, try taking the exercise outside, which can help keep dogs engaged. Explore new woodland on walks together or if you live near a coast, go for a swim in the sea, or go on a bike ride through the countryside. There are so many different activities to choose from, including: Swimming Canicross Dog agility Hiking Trail running Cycling Football Paddle-boarding or surfing Dog Yoga You might even have dog-friendly exercise classes in your local area, do a bit of digging and see what’s on offer near you and go from there. Photo by Blue Bird from Pexels 2. Prepare in advance Firstly, this means treats! You’ll need to condition your dog to want to exercise with you, because even if they generally enjoy being fit and spending time with you, their attention can easily wane – especially if you’re outside. So, pack a bum-bag filled with lots of high-reward treats, and make this part of your work-out get up. Wear it every time you work out with your dog and reward them for every good behaviour. It won’t take long for your dog to put two and two together! For different activities you might require different apparatus, so do your research and see what you will need. For example, to take up trail running with your pup, you’ll need to ensure that your dog's leash or harness is secure. It shouldn't be too tight or too loose and you should always have control over your dog. Likewise for swimming, while you might not require any floaties, if you plan on swimming in open water with your dog, it might be wise to invest in a doggy lifejacket , to protect them in case of any sudden currents. 3. Build on the routine you already have in place… If you like to take your dog on walks around the neighbourhood, great! You’re already off to a good start, now it’s time to build on your current routine in manageable increments. That might look like taking a different route with more uphill terrain to give you both a cardio work-out, or maybe it’s to stop in a remote area and complete a short circuit of activities – from yoga, to push ups to sprints. There’s something for everyone, of all fitness capabilities. The key part is starting slow, stretching plenty and gradually building up the intensity, so that you can avoid getting injured. Both you and your dog will need to build up your stamina before you hit those big fitness goals. Photo by Blue Bird from Pexels 4. Hydration is key One of the best things about exercising alongside your pup, is you’ll be reminded of the importance of hydration at every step of the way. Bring plenty of water for you and your dog, because staying hydrated is a key component to getting fit. On a similar note, factor in short breaks to make sure both you and your pup are getting fit, safely. Slowing down to a walk so that your dog can stop and sniff the grass is a great way for you to catch your breath and for them to engage the all-important olfactory bulb in their brains. That way, when you get home, you’ll have tired your dog out both mentally and physically. 5. Get connected Make friends in local community with similar goals, get involved in #dogtok on TikTok and keep a log of your progress with fitness apps. You can download apps that log your running route, or keep a record of the exercise you complete. Logging your milestones and the improvements you notice in your everyday health is a great way to stay on track and meet your goals. But exercising regularly with your dog has a variety of other benefits, including developing the closeness of your bond and improving both of your mental health. Routine exercise can also help your dog overcome any problem behaviours they may have, such as excessive barking and destructive behaviours. Exercising together will help stimulate them mentally and if you keep a diary of your progress, note down the changes you see in both your life and your dog’s behaviour.
- [Spring interior trends to try in your home](https://ralphand.co/blogs/news/spring-interior-trends-to-try-in-your-home): Spring is on it’s way! Although you may not think it, the trees are beginning to bloom once more. Not only does the start of the season signify a move to warmer weather and longer days, but we see a big shift in trends from winter neutrals, to lighter and brighter interior styles. Here are some top trends to introduce into your home this spring. Pastels and brights The neutral, brown tones of winter are out, instead consider packing your home with plenty of colour. Mint greens, blush pinks, sunny yellows or even powder blues are forecast to be popular choices this year. Colour can be introduced into your home without completely redecorating. Add wall art, candles, vases and soft furnishings such as pillows or throws in a bright colour that compliments your current interior style. You could even try introducing a feature wall, with a slightly brighter colour of paint, or perhaps a floral wallpaper. Our Rayleigh beds are the perfect accessory to add a subtle pop of colour to a classy, neutral interior. Sustainable, vintage accessories Now, more than ever before, we’re thinking about the impact of our purchases, and where we can, opting for more sustainable alternatives. Luckily, sustainable vintage pieces are in this season. Rather than buying new, why not look for a more classic, recycled piece? Vintage pieces such as lamps, china dinner sets, or vases and sculptures can add a real sentimental feel to any room. But, vintage pieces are not just super stylish - giving new life to old pieces is far more sustainable than buying new. If you’re feeling extra creative, why not go the extra step and upcycle a piece of traditional furniture to stamp your own style onto it? Dual purpose rooms The Covid pandemic changed the way we view our homes. What was once just a bedroom desk is now an office, and dining rooms across the country have become conference rooms. So, for our homes to meet these ever growing demands, we needed to design our interiors around this dual purpose. Install plenty of storage options, so you can pack away your books or paperwork when the work day is done. If you really want to separate work and pleasure, try introducing a partition to compartmentalise different spaces in your home. Traditional home features New build elements like white kitchens and grey carpets are a thing of the past - instead homeowners and renters are looking to emphasise their homes traditional features. Herringbone wood floors are all the rage, authentic fireplaces are a dream for interior designers, and vintage windows and doors are having a revival. To add a ‘period property’ feel to your space, you could switch your flooring up for decorative tiles or wood. Alternatively, you could try your hand at some DIY home hacks by giving the viral wall panelling trick a go. Pay your garden some attention Often our gardens go neglected through the winter months, especially if you have a dog. The trees become bare, foliage unrecognisable from it’s summer bloom and you may even have muddy paw prints across your patio space. However, as the warmer weather returns, garden parties and BBQs will be back on the menu, and you’ll want your abode to be fit for hosting. Invest in some grass seed to cover any unwanted patches in your lawn and begin planting fresh flowers to fill in any lifeless flower beds. If you want to create an Italian Riviera vibe in your garden, source some wicker furniture, some solar panelled lanterns, and even an outdoor chiminea to make your garden the envy of your friends and family. Let us know your favourite spring home interior trends!

- [5 steps to winning your first dog show](https://ralphand.co/blogs/news/5-steps-to-winning-your-first-pet-show): It’s officially summer, which means the season of dog shows is upon us. With many family fun days, fetes and dog shows running summer competitions, you’ll want to make sure your pup is ready to put their best paw forward and wow the judges. Whether you’re entering them in cutest pup awards, agility tests, treat sniffing or even the waggiest tail competition - here are five steps to help you and your dog finish with a rosette. Practise makes pawfect They say practise makes perfect, and while perfection isn’t guaranteed, it certainly helps to practice ahead of the event. There’s no better way to prepare for a show than spending some quality time practising with your dog. In the lead up to the competition, research which events your dog will be competing in. If the competition is agility focused, then heading outdoors for some obedience training is a great start. You can begin by teaching your dog to walk at your heel off lead and follow your commands. In some dog shows there is an award for the cutest dog present. Judging this round of the competition can be particularly tough, because all dogs are adorable by nature. So, your time together may be best spent brushing up on any tricks your dog knows. Giving the judge a paw, or rolling over, might just win your dog the gold. Groom to impress Make sure your dog is looking their best to give them an extra shot at stealing the limelight. Ahead of the show, make an appointment with your regular groomer to get their nails trimmed and their fur smelling fresh. On the day of the event, give them a good brush to keep their coat looking healthy. You could even give your dog the edge by dressing them in their best collar, and maybe a matching lead if you have one! If not, shop our full range of collars and leads . Distraction training Dog shows are filled with distractions due to crowds of people and their four-legged companions. It’s just as important to practise in crowded spaces, like town centres or parks, to make sure that your pup’s attention stays entirely on you. Trial them on a lead first until you feel their attention is undivided. Then over time practise without a lead. Don’t forget to bring the essentials If your dog is food orientated, their favourite snacks are an essential. Not only are treats a great way to incentivise your dog to complete tasks whilst in front of the judges, they also make a yummy post-show reward. Other on the day essentials include a collar and lead. Don’t forget to wear suitable shoes as you may be required to run alongside your dog, such as in agility events. Water will likely be provided for your dog, but it may be worth packing your own water and bowl, in case it’s a hot day. Another important item on the day? Your dog poo bags! There’s only one thing worse than your dog needing to go for a number two in the middle of the show, and that’s having nothing to pick it up with. Be prepared. Be patient Regardless of your dog's performance, remain calm and encouraging with your instructions. It’s not all about winning and just taking part can be an enriching experience for your dog. Dog shows are a great chance for socialisation for dogs, something many of the pandemic puppies are in desperate need of. Regardless of the outcome, make sure to give your dog lots of praise.
- [How to choose the right dog bed for car journeys](https://ralphand.co/blogs/news/how-to-choose-the-right-dog-bed-for-car-journeys): Traveling with your dog can be a challenge, and while some dogs enjoy a quick car ride, others find it terrifying. In this blog, we’ll share advice for choosing the right bed and tips for making sure road trips are a breeze. When it comes to choosing the perfect dog bed for your pup to travel in, there are a few questions you might want to ask yourself. Is the fabric easy to clean? Car journeys can quickly become messy, especially if your dog finds themselves feeling unwell on long trips. Opt for a bed with a machine washable cover to make road trips a breeze. Does the bed fit snugly in the seat? Ensure your pet has room to turn around and get comfortable on long drives, without sliding around the backseat at every turn. If you frequently travel with your dog, you will want to find a bed that fits easily into your car. Our range of nest beds are designed to fit snugly into most vehicles and most have sturdy sides to leave your dog feeling snug. Can I safely secure my dog in the seat for the whole trip ? For a bed to be considered safe for car use, you must be able to attach a seatbelt onto their harness whilst on the move. For bigger cars, and for nervous dogs, you might want to consider fitting a crate into the vehicle to provide your dog with extra security. If you plan for your dog to be crated during the journey, a soft and cushioned pillow bed is all you need to ensure your pet has a comfortable journey. Factors to consider when buying a dog bed for your car : Comfort: Comfort is a big consideration when it comes to choosing the right dog bed for your pup. Each dog bed has their own specifications, and some beds have specific materials to meet certain dog’s needs. For example, our beds are packed with polyester fibre filling to guarantee a warm, comfortable and healthy spot for your dog to relax on, perfect for older dogs or those that suffer from chronic pain. Even if your dog is young and healthy, a dog bed made from good quality fabric can help to soothe their nerves in the car by giving them a cosy place to relax. The comfier their bed is, the more likely they are to curl up and rest. Stability: Stability is crucial too. Just like us, our dogs aren’t likely to be comfortable in a bed that is sliding side to side with every turn. A quality dog bed should be secure once installed, and it should remain in its place, even if you have to brake suddenly. The less that the dog bed moves, the more secure your dog will feel and the easier it becomes for them to peacefully sleep during your time on the road. Installation: The right dog bed should be easy to fit each time. It should be simple to work out exactly where and how the bed will be installed in your car, to ensure safe travel. Consider where your dog is most comfortable sleeping (if at all) during car trips, and set up their bed in that area of the car. Ensure the bed you choose is simple to set up and that you will easily be able to install it before your trip. Durability: Choose a hard-wearing bed that is simple to clean. The right dog bed will need to be well made and durable so that you do not need to repair or replace it frequently. Pay attention to the cleaning instructions too – machine washable beds make for quick and easy cleaning once you reach your destination. If durability is a concern, we recommend the Chenille Dalton nest bed , which is made using the finest chenille upholstery fabric to guarantee the bed will maintain its shape after many years of use. Choosing the right bed can help eliminate stress for dogs who feel nervous in the car. Signs your dog may be struggling include: Experiencing anxiety which leads to heavy panting, crying, shaking, shedding, and gastrointestinal upset. Claustrophobia which can be triggered in cars due to it being such a small area. This can make some dogs panic and causes them to dread their time in the car. Having a difficult time getting comfortable due to confined space and uncomfortable seats. This can lead to negative associations with car rides. Having a hard time calming down due to anticipation of where they might be going. Since some dogs may associate going to the vet with being in the car, this can make it more difficult for dogs to calm down. Tricks and tips for entertaining your dog during the journey To keep your dog entertained on long journeys and help alleviate some of their concerns, pack a few of their favourite distractions into their crate or bed. Treats: Giving your dog their favourite trip during a car ride can help to remove some of the negative connotations that they might associated with car rides – such as a trip to the vets! If they know that they will get a delicious treat each time they go in the car, they may feel less fear and more excitement when it comes to car journeys. Chew toys: The act of chewing and licking can be soothing for your dog, so give them a distraction in the form of a chew toy during their time in the car, to help calm them down. There are also several...
- [Preparing to bring home a new pet](https://ralphand.co/blogs/news/preparing-to-bring-home-a-new-pet): You’ve fallen in love with a new pet and you’ve agreed a date to bring them home from the rescue centre or breeder. But now you might be wondering how best to introduce your new animal into your home, and any other pets you might have to ensure the transition goes as smoothly as possible. Existing pets are not able to choose their new brother or sister, so it is up to you to ensure introductions go as safely as possible by following some general guidelines. Read on for five things to remember before bringing home a new pet… Prepare for the big day… Ahead of bringing your new pet home, get prepared. If you’re introducing a puppy into the mix, look for dangers such as cleaning products containing chemicals, or gaps in your garden fence, that may not pose an immediate danger to your existing dog, but could be a risk to a curious puppy. Scent training can also be used to help ready your animals for the new arrival. First, get a clean blanket and have your dog sleep on it for a week, and then ask the shelter or breeder to put the blanket with your existing dog’s scent on into their bed. This allows the new puppy to get a lot of information about their new family before they arrive. You could also ask for a blanket with the new pet’s scent on to introduce to your existing animals, so that when the day arrives to bring them home, it’s less of a surprise to the rest of your pets. Exercise your pets before any introductions… All animals need a level of mental and physical stimulation to lead fulfilling lives. This is especially important if the animal in question is a dog with boundless energy to burn off. Always take your existing dog on a long walk or other form of exercise, such as swimming, before introducing them to a new pet. Depending on the circumstances with your new pet, you might also wish to exercise them before you take them to meet your other pets. If you’ve bought a puppy from a breeder, it’s worth checking which vaccinations they have had and whether it is in their best interests to walk them in public spaces. If you have adopted a dog from a rescue home, they might already be quite nervous and worn out from a day of travel and disruption. Spend time getting to know your new pet to work out what they need. Top Tip: Before picking up your new pet, make sure you have an adjustable collar and lead that fits them comfortably, with an identification tag attached. By law, all dogs must have a tag featuring their owner’s contact details, such as a phone number and address, before going out and about for walks. Introduce your pets on neutral territory… Often, dogs enjoy spending time with other pets and introducing a puppy to an existing dog isn’t always an issue. However not every dog wants a new friend, and sometimes there can be complications. For example, if your current dog is a senior dog, they may not be able to handle being around a puppy around full-time. If you are introducing a new puppy to your current pets, it’s important they meet outside the home, preferably in an outdoor, fenced in space where they can become familiar with each other’s scents without the risk of territorial behaviour from your existing pets. When you come back to the home, ensure both the new animal and your existing pets have their own space to retreat to should they need a quiet moment to relax, with their own beds, water and food bowls. Use high-value treats to reward positive interactions… Before bringing your new pet home, stock up on high-value treats and read up on positive body language so that you can reward your pets for interacting positively with one another. Watch the position of their ears, tails and the heckles on the backs of their necks, to read how your dog’s feeling about a situation. Let them sniff each other and the surroundings as much as possible to grow comfortable with one another. A great exercise when introducing a new dog to your existing dog/s, is to parallel walk. This allows both dogs to grow used to each other, before bringing them into the same space. It’s important to let their relationship develop with time, and not allow them off lead together until you’re sure both animals are calm and comfortable coexisting together. Whenever you leave home and are unable to supervise, you might want to put your pets in separate rooms or spaces. This helps reduce the chance of any negative interactions between your pets. Be mindful of each pet’s individual needs… Whilst it is important for your pets to spend time together, they will also need some one-on-one time with you to grow in confidence in the new situation. Some dogs can experience feelings of jealousy when you bring home a new dog, and if the new pet has a dominant personality, it’s all the more important to give each animal one-on-one time. Some ways to build positive relationships with your pets individually include: Exercise – Whether you like to walk or run, getting out in the fresh air has benefits for both you and your dogs, mentally and...

- [5 ways dogs help us live longer, happier lives](https://ralphand.co/blogs/news/5-ways-dogs-help-us-live-longer-happier-lives): It’s Mental Health Awareness Week (15 to 21 May 2023) and spending time with our pets can help reduce feelings of anxiety. But that’s not all. Research even suggests that people with dogs live longer lives than those without . Whether you adopt or buy, your dog will no doubt improve your life and your mental health. Training, bonding, and even spoiling them from time to time, can bring you an array of psychological benefits. In this blog post, we’ll look at the reasons why having a dog can improve the quality and length of your life. Having a dog increases our activity levels. Evidence suggests that dog owners are considerably more active than people without a dog . In the UK, people who have dogs get up to 2000 more steps and 13 more minutes of physical activity per day, which can lead to improved cardiovascular health. A survey by Public Health England (PHE) found that close to 3 million adults in the UK fall below the recommended daily amount of physical activity, with a third of us (31%) saying they struggled to find the time to fit exercise into our lives. But our dogs will ask to go out for a walk, rain or shine. Even a brisk 10 minute walk each day can help lower your risk of type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease and even some cancers . If you’re looking to build your fitness this summer, take a read of our top tips for introducing dogs into your fitness routine . They get us outside in nature. Once you’re out the door, the benefits don’t stop there. Fresh air, sunshine and social interaction with other dog walkers are all powerful natural remedies when you’re feeling low. Having a dog motivates us to spend time in green spaces, and whether it’s a walk at the beach or a wander through the woods, being in nature brings significant benefits. Research shows that being outdoors boosts your mood, offers stress relief, soothes pain and can even enhance your creativity . They teach us to connect and to live in the moment. Dogs are masters of mindfulness . They teach us how to live in the moment and truly be present. Next time you’re out on a walk together, notice how your dog stops to literally smell the roses and enjoy every moment, and remember to do that in your own life too. Academic and psychologist June McNicholas explains that pets can be a lifeline for socially isolated people . “Pet care and self-care are linked. When you take a dog out for a walk, people talk to you and that may be the only social contact an isolated person has the whole day. If you have a cat, you can have a conversation standing in the cat food aisle in the supermarket, deciding which brand to buy. When pet owners leave the house to buy pet food, they’re more likely to buy food for themselves and when they feed their pet, they’ll sit down to eat too. People with disabilities often find that able-bodied people are socially awkward with them; if they have a dog it breaks down barriers and allows a more comfortable and natural interaction.” They’re good for our mental health. Spending time with our pets can naturally boost production of happy hormones, such as oxytocin, serotonin and dopamine, in our brains. This helps lower our stress levels and can lower blood pressure and cholesterol. "A dog is the only thing on earth that loves you more than you love yourself." – Josh Billings Dogs are the nation’s most popular choice of emotional support animals, and for good reason. They can bring a sense of calm and when you’re having a bad day, they give unconditional love. Studies suggest that people who have pets even have a reduced risk of depression, and show fewer symptoms than those without a pet in the home . They help us live happier, healthier lives. The mental and physical health benefits of dog ownership is clear to see. Having a dog helps you better manage your emotions, improves your social life, and can give you purpose. With all this in mind, it’s clear to see why dog owners live healthier and longer lives . And for all these reasons and more, they deserve a comfy place to rest at the end of a long day being unofficial emotional support animals. All our luxury pillow and nest beds are designed to give your dog the best night's sleep. Made with the highest quality fabric and packed with recycled fibre that holds its structure, providing your dog the support their joints need as they age. - [5 of our favourite dog walks in Wales](https://ralphand.co/blogs/news/5-of-our-favourite-dog-walks-in-wales): Are you bored of the same old walks and looking to explore somewhere new with your dog? If you like to walk your dogs on the beach, from the beginning of May, many popular UK beaches ban dogs . Before heading to the beach, check the local council’s website to see if the beach you are planning to visit has implemented this ban. If you’re planning a summer holiday to Wales and you’re bringing along your dog, consider this a bucket list of incredible places to check off before summer is over. Wales is spoiled for choice with beautiful forests, hikes and coastal walks that are open to dog walkers, all year round. If you want to spice up your dog’s life, take them on one of these beautiful walks. 1. Dinefwr - Surrounding Dinewfr castle and grounds , there is a richly diverse range of habitats and environment. From flower rich hay meadows to dense woodland, to wide open spaces, there’s plenty to explore without taking a step inside. The only place you can’t take your dog is within the deer park, for obvious reasons. But the castle itself is dog friendly, and there’s a dog friendly cafe, Castle Walk where you can stop off for a drink after a long walk. The Dinefwr wildlife walk requires your dog to be on lead, but it’s worth it. This 3 mile walk takes you through some of the best wildlife-spotting places in Dinefwr’s historic parkland, which is famed for its stunning views of the valley, as well as a medieval castle and 17th century mansion. Many of the castles and historic buildings across the UK are located on expansive grounds, with plenty of space to explore your dog, you can check if they’re dog friendly on the National Trust website . The National Trust recently created a pawprint rating system and has given all the places in their care a rating based on how dog friendly they are. Dinefwr scores full stars for dogs , and is worth the trip if you live nearby. 2. Brecon Beacons National Park - here you’ll find many different walks of varied duration and difficulty. If you fancy a challenge, try the Dragon’s Back circular route through the Black Mountains. The first ascent of the walk takes you over the ups and downs of the ‘Dragons Back’, aptly named due to its shapely mounds that resemble a sleeping dragon. This route includes the highest point of the Black Mountains, Waun Fach, and standing at 811m tall, is the second highest mountain in southern Britain. Please keep your dog on a lead to ensure safety around the grazing livestock and wild ponies that roam the hills. Don’t forget to read the Dog Code before heading out for a dog walk in the Brecon Beacons National Park. 3. Rhossili and South Gower Coast – Nestled in The Gower Peninsula , you’ll find a number of award-winning walks, and soon see why this area was awarded the UK’s first Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and home to Gower Walking Festival . The festival takes place each summer, this year from the 2-10 September 2023 and features a number of dog friendly routes. While dogs are welcome, they must be kept on lead when around livestock. There are many walking routes you can take, with different terrain and all with spectacular views. Best of all, the beach is also dog friendly all year round. Our advice if you’ve never been to the area before is to start with the manageable Rhossili headland walk . The first half of the walk is a relatively flat stone track, but the second half is more uneven and can get muddy. Depending on the weather, there’s a chance your dog will be filthy by the time you get them back to the car. For peace of mind, pack one of our Richmond blankets, which can be used to dry them off or simply as a barrier between a muddy pup and your car seats. 4. The Great Orme - One of the most Instagrammable spots in the UK, is also referred to as ‘The Sea Monster’ due to its scaly exterior and size, the Great Orme is a wondrous natural phenomenon located in the popular resort town of Llandudno. This huge chunk of limestone rises 207m straight out of the sea, and is home to some beautiful flora and fauna in many different natural habitats. If you’re walking an older dog who loves sniffing and stopping to admire the view, but isn’t a fan of long treks, you may want to hop on the cable car or the Great Orme tramway to discover the views at the summit, then slowly wander down. 5. Llyn Brianne and surrounding forests - This spectacular man-made reservoir, sits 300m above sea level and is a peaceful place to walk your dog. Llyn Brianne did not exist until the early 1970’s, when the river Tywi, which rises in the Cambrian mountains just 6 miles above Llyn Brianne, and other waterways were dammed to create Wales’ second-biggest reservoir by water volume, and South Wales’ largest lake. To truly appreciate the size of the structure, you can walk along the dam wall, whilst you enjoy breathtaking views of the valley below. There are scenic walks throughout the area, and an abundance of wildlife including the rare red squirrel. If you fancy it, you...

- [Top tips to train your dog during the holidays](https://ralphand.co/blogs/news/training-your-dog-during-the-holidays): Now you’re home more and the kids are out of school, there’s no better time to get training. Whether young or old, all dogs can benefit from regular training sessions. It helps build your bond and reduces naughty behaviour in and out of the home. Start with the basics, read our advice for training dogs of any age new obedience tricks like lie down, fetch and roll over. Set realistic goals You may want to set up a schedule for the summer, and involve the whole family in training your dog. Even adult dogs have new things to learn and behaviours to master, so it may be worth writing a list of goals for your dog’s learning this summer. Start small, perhaps they need to work on their recall after a nightmare walk in the park or maybe it’s time to finally master the art of heeling by your side on a walk. If your dog is struggling with the basics, you could even go along to a local puppy pre-school for some in person pointers. Work on the problem areas After identifying where your dog has room for improvement in their training, set aside a few minutes every day to reinforce the correct behaviours with them. Remain patient with them and don’t expect results instantly. The trick to mastery is to go slow and reinforce often. Keep sessions short (5-10 minutes), and frequently praise your dog with enthusiasm when they perform the trick or behaviour correctly. Keep them busy to protect your home A bored dog has the potential to be destructive, so be mindful to provide them with plenty of stimulation whilst you’re not home. Games to keep your dog entertained If you’re looking for fun boredom busters to keep your dog busy during the holidays, consider: 1. Hide and treat Just like hide and seek, only with more treats and less squabbling. The game encourages your dog to use their nose, which is great mental stimulation for them. First, remove your dog from the room as you set up the game. Next, hide some of their favourite treats in different spots around the room. If you have a snuffle mat or similar dog toy, hide a few treats in obvious places to help your dog understand the game. Once the room is ready, let them in and give them the comment ‘search’, ‘find’ or even ‘hide and seek!’ Give them pointers if they look confused, this can be especially necessary with older dogs as they first get to grips with the game. If you have multiple dogs, consider preparing separate rooms for them so they do not over eat or become possessive over the same treat. Give a lot of excited praise once they find each treat. When they have a good understanding of the command, you can even begin expanding the area where you hide the treats, making it more difficult. 2. The cup game You can set up this interactive game with your dog using just a few cups, boxes or containers, or whatever you have lying around the house. Start by hiding one of their favourite treats under the cup. Set several similar cups upside down beside it, placing treats under only one of the cups. If your dog has never played this game, you may need to start by showing them where the treats are and covering them up. Once they get the hang of it, you can increase the difficulty by not letting them see which cup the treats are under beforehand, which forces them to use their nose to sniff out the right cup. 3. Fetch for pros For the super energetic dogs that absolutely cannot sit still, a game of fetch is never long enough. Consider investing in an automatic ball launcher to keep them entertained for hours! Some dogs will get the hang of this very quickly, but you might need to train your dog to place the ball in the correct position to be launched again. We hope this blog post has given you some ideas to keep your dog entertained this summer holiday.
- [Choosing the right dog bed for travelling with your dog](https://ralphand.co/blogs/news/choosing-the-right-dog-bed-for-travelling-with-your-dog): Dogs have a much shorter lifespan than we do, and what is just a holiday to us means more to them. So why not take your dog on an adventure this summer? You don’t even have to go far to find dog-friendly attractions and beauty spots in the UK . Comfort is king when it comes to getting your dog to actually use their bed. This becomes even more important when you are travelling with your dog, and you need them to stay in one spot for periods of time. Whether you’re on the road to your destination, or looking for a comfortable place for your dog to rest once you arrive at your holiday destination, there are a few considerations for you to pick the right dog bed for your trip. FOR CALM CAR JOURNEYS So when it comes to travelling with your dog, which is better - a pillow or nest bed? When it comes to choosing the right dog bed for car journeys , the answer depends on a variety of factors, including the size of your car and shape of the seats. If your dog sits on a seat, an appropriately sized nest bed may give them just the cushioning they need to settle in for a long drive. However if they sit in the boot of the car, it may be worth investing in a pillow bed, to allow them to stretch out comfortably. Regardless of where your dog is positioned in the car, it’s important to attach a seatbelt to their harness to keep them safe. According to the Highway Code, animals must be suitably restrained when travelling in a moving vehicle. If you don’t already have one, seatbelts for dogs can be bought in a range of shops, from Pets at Home to Halfords. FOR A DEEP NIGHT’S SLEEP, AWAY FROM HOME Once you arrive at the hotel or rented accommodation, you may find that even if they are dog friendly, they ask that your dog keep off the bed. This is where it pays to bring along a good quality bed for your dog to rest in, as they are less likely to jump on the furniture in the first place. Like people, dogs also need a good night’s sleep to stay healthy. This is especially important for older dogs and larger breeds who need a bit more rest than the average dog. A cosy bed that cushions their bodies encourages sleep and to stay asleep all night long. Once you arrive at the hotel or rented accommodation, you may find that even if they are dog friendly, they ask that your dog keep off the bed. This is where it pays to bring along a good quality bed for your dog to rest in, as they are less likely to jump on the furniture in the first place. As dog lovers ourselves, we always welcomed pets here at Bailiff’s Cottage and were eager to accommodate them.” Unfortunately she said she did see a rise in dog hair, and any owner will know how tricky it is to remove pet hair from furniture and bedding. “We initially bought a couple of nest beds because they perfectly matched the interior of our luxury holiday cottage and complemented the space so well. When they arrived, we loved the quality and so did our guests. After a few months we even noticed less pet hair on furniture as the dogs who were visiting preferred to sleep in the dog bed. Now we need to get some for our own dogs and finally get our settee back!” Supporting local brands Beth Robinson who manages Welsh Farm Glamping goes the extra mile, offering her four legged guests a goody bag full of treats as well as a luxury pillow bed to snooze on in peace as the sunlight filters into the Country yurt. She said: “There is no way we'd choose to go on a wild adventure and leave behind our four-legged family. So when we created our glamping getaways, we knew they had to be dog friendly (or we'd be offering a double standard - and that's a no-go for us!) "At Welsh Farm Glamping, we believe in honouring Wales for its romantic and rugged landscapes to the rich heritage in crafts, food and wildlife. We choose to stock Welsh brands and support local businesses, so we were glad to partner with Ralph and Co and offer their beds for dogs who come to stay. - [How To Make Your Dog the Ultimate Staycation Guest](https://ralphand.co/blogs/news/how-to-make-your-dog-the-ultimate-staycation-guest): As we all know, a "back-to-school" checklist isn’t just for kids; it’s for our furry family members, too. Just as you wouldn't send your child to school unprepared, you shouldn't embark on a staycation without equipping your dog for success. In collaboration with Dog Furiendly, we're here to share tips that will not only make your dog the ultimate staycation guest but also help you earn some extra credit with your hosts. Dig Deeper into Pet Policies Before you "Book Now," take some time to dig into the fine print of your chosen dog friendly accommodation. "dog friendly" can encompass a wide range of amenities and restrictions. Will your Great Dane be greeted with open arms or frowned upon? Are multiple pooches a party or a problem? And let's not forget the VIP (Very Important Pet) treatment: are we talking about a simple water bowl or does your pup get a doggy welcome hamper worthy of a rockstar? It’s also worth enquiring about ground-floor rooms near exits; because when nature calls at midnight, you and your pup shouldn't have to navigate a labyrinth. And speaking of rooms, does this home-away-from-home come with a cushy dog bed? If so, what size? Are dogs allowed on the furniture? Are there specific areas where dogs are allowed to relieve themselves, complete with pick-up bags and disposal bins? Be clear on any additional pet fees or deposits, and check the proximity of the nearest vet for emergencies. We also recommend scanning the customer reviews focusing on their dog-related experiences, as these often offer invaluable insights into the property’s true level of dog-friendliness. Comb through all these aspects to ensure a comfortable and delightful staycation for both you and your furry friend. On Arrival Right after you've checked in and introduced your pet to the accommodation staff, it's an excellent idea to take a walk around the property. This initial exploration serves a few important functions. Firstly, it allows your dog to become accustomed to their new surroundings. The more familiar a space becomes, the more comfortable your pet will feel, which can reduce stress and anxious behaviours. Additionally, this walk gives you the opportunity to double-check the areas where pets are permitted or restricted. Most places have specific zones that are dog friendly, and knowing these can save you from uncomfortable situations later on. If you're unsure, don't hesitate to ask a staff member during your stroll. Being proactive about understanding the policy can make your stay more enjoyable and stress-free for both you and your canine companion. During Your Stay If staying in a hotel, take a moment to introduce your pet to the staff. It's not just polite; it familiarises the people who will interact with your furry friend throughout your stay. In the unfortunate case that your pet causes some trouble, already having established a personal connection can smooth over many issues. One significant concern for dog parents and staff alike is noise management. If you know that your dog gets anxious and barks when you’re away, consider bringing a white noise machine. This simple device can help to mask outside noises that might trigger your dog, making their stay—and yours—more peaceful. It’s also worth popping a worn t-shirt with your scent near your dog's bed. This could offer additional comfort, helping them relax which will minimise any disruptive barking. Your dog's comfort is essential for a happy stay. Bringing their own bed provides a familiar space and protects the accommodation’s furniture from fur and potential accidents. On the other hand, if they already provide a dog bed then that saves plenty of hassle (particularly for bigger dogs). We would recommend calling ahead to check the size of the bed, and if you think it’s suitable, take a blanket to provide some familiarity for your dog. While away, try to stick to your pet's usual feeding and walking schedule. Consistency helps mitigate stress and creates a semblance of normality in an otherwise unfamiliar environment. Also, use feeding mats and always clean up any mess to maintain the cleanliness of the room. Being Courteous to Other Guests Remember that not everyone may be as enthusiastic about dogs as you are. Some guests may have allergies or phobias, while others might simply prefer to keep their distance from pets. It's important to be mindful of other guests and maintain a respectful distance in shared spaces. Common Areas: When in common areas like lounges, lifts, or hallways, keep your dog on a short lead and under control. Avoid allowing your pet to approach or jump on other guests, even if your dog is ‘friendly’. Etiquette In The Lift: When using the lift, be prepared to step out if it gets crowded. Not all guests may be comfortable sharing tight spaces with a dog, so always be considerate and accommodating. Dining Areas: If there is a dining area or restaurant on-site, ask about their pet policy. Some places may allow dogs in designated...
- [8 tasty treats to spice up your dog's dinner time](https://ralphand.co/blogs/news/8-tasty-homemade-dog-food-recipes-to-spice-up-your-dog-s-dinnertime): When it comes to making sure your dog has plenty of nutritious dog food, there are some ways to make dinnertime a fun game for your dog, rather than a chore. If your dog is food motivated, you can extend the fun of dinner time with a game. Introducing a slow feeder or puzzle bowl, snuffle mat or scatter feeding your dog can keep them mentally engaged for longer. Dogs like a bit of variety in their meal times too. If your pet has gone off their food without reason, it could be a sign they are unwell and need to visit the vet. However if your dog is just a bit picky, there are lots of ways you can spice up their dinner time and make it more fun for the both of you! Never feed your dog onion, garlic, salt, cocoa powder or nutmeg as these are toxic to dogs. 1. For a glossy, soft, healthy coat with less shedding… Coconut oil has a h
