A pancake recipe that your dog will go bananas for…
The history of Pancake Day
Pancake Day, also known as Shrove Tuesday, takes place on the 4th of March, and marks the last day before the start of Lent. The tradition of eating pancakes on this day stems from using up ingredients like eggs and milk before the period of fasting begins.
Unfortunately for our dogs, eating human pancakes can cause an upset tummy or worse.
The pancakes we eat usually contain milk in them, which is usually difficult for dogs to digest. Lots of us enjoy a bit of sugar or chocolate on top, which can also be toxic to dogs and end in a trip to the vets.
This year, why not give our grain-free dog friendly pancakes a try? Best of all, they only contain two ingredients that you likely already have in the pantry - eggs and bananas! These pancakes only take a few minutes to make and you can even eat them too.
You will need:
-
2-3 bananas
-
Two medium eggs
-
Frying pan
-
Blender
-
Honey / agave syrup (optional)
Method
-
Chop up the bananas into a bowl, or straight into the blender.
-
Add two eggs and blend in an electric blender to help you get a nice smooth consistency.
-
If you’re going to share the treats too you can add honey or agave syrup to taste at this point.
-
Grease the pan and set the heat on medium.
-
Pour paste into the frying pan and cook until lightly browned, flip as confidently as you can! At least your dog can help with cleaning up any spillages!
-
Allow them to cool and before serving with optional toppings. Fruit, peanut butter and doggy ice cream are bound to get your dog’s tail wagging.
-
Top Tip – you can keep any leftovers in the fridge for tomorrow!
Toppings
There are plenty of delicious dog friendly toppings to decorate their pancakes.
You could spoil them with a blueberry compote topping, or add some pumpkin puree or homemade apple sauce for extra fibre. Add a dollop of peanut butter or some salmon oil for a soft and silky coat. Greek yoghurt, plain yoghurt, dairy-free, and even frozen yoghurt are all dog friendly as long as they're free from xylitol and added sugars.
Savoury options like sliced carrot, mushy peas and meats like chicken and salmon can all make for a tasty treat for your pet.
Don’t forget to allow your dog friendly pancake to cool a minute before you serve it up, as they are unlikely to have the self-control to hold back if you give them a piping hot pancake and can end up with burns to the mouth and throat.
With all this in mind, we hope you and your dogs have a wonderful Pancake Day!
